Make Orders vs. Take Orders — And How Order Timers Work

On Novig, you have two ways to place a trade: Take (accept an existing price) or Make (set your own price and wait for a match).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Take Order?

A take order means you accept an existing position already available in the market. Your order executes immediately at the displayed price. Take orders are ideal when you want instant confirmation or when the current price meets your expectations.

What is a Make Order?

A make order means you create a new position at a price you choose. Your order goes into the market and waits for another user to accept the other side. Make orders can offer better pricing, but require waiting for a match. You also choose how long your order stays active.

When should I use a Take Order?

Use a take order when: you want immediate execution, the current market price is acceptable to you, or you're trading a fast-moving live/in-play market.

When should I use a Make Order?

Use a make order when: you want better pricing than what's currently available, you have a specific price target in mind, or you're planning ahead and can wait.

Example — Take vs. Make:

Say the current MLB moneyline has the Mets at -125 and the Yankees at +117.

  • Take Order on Mets: Your order executes instantly at -125.

  • Make Order on Mets at -120: You set a better price for yourself. Your order sits in the book until someone takes the Yankees at +120. Once matched, both orders execute.

How do make order timers work for pregame markets?

When you place a pregame make order, you set a custom duration. Your order will cancel at whichever comes first: when your set duration expires, OR when the game goes live. Even if your duration extends past the scheduled start time, the order cancels automatically when the event begins.

How do make order timers work for live (in-play) markets?

For live make orders, you must set a duration before placing. Options include "Game End" (order stays open until the event concludes) or a custom duration. The order cancels at whichever comes first: your custom duration OR when the game ends.

What if a game starts earlier than scheduled?

Novig may update the game status to "live" before the displayed start time. When this happens, all open pregame make orders are cancelled. Monitor game status closely, especially for events with variable start times (combat sports, tennis, golf).

Tips for managing make orders:

  • Set realistic durations — consider how long until the game starts

  • Use shorter durations in volatile, fast-moving markets

  • Keep an eye on live game status changes for events with unpredictable start times
